Moon Cactus

Description

The moon cactus (Gymnocalycium mihanovichii grafted onto Hylocereus species) is a small, colorful cactus popular as a decorative houseplant.

Description:

• Appearance: The top part of the moon cactus is bright red, pink, yellow, or orange and lacks chlorophyll, which is why it must be grafted onto a green, chlorophyll-producing cactus base. This top section is spherical and often ribbed with tiny spines.

• Grafting: The colorful top is actually a different species from the green base, and the two are fused together in a process called grafting.

• Size: Typically small, usually staying around 4 to 6 inches tall.

• Flowers: It may produce small flowers from the colored top, but blooming is rare indoors.

Light & Care:

• Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sunlight can cause sunburn.

• Water sparingly—only when the soil is completely dry.

• Needs well-draining soil and does best in a warm, dry environment.

Moon cacti are low-maintenance and make fun, colorful additions to windowsills and desks.
