Description

The Canna Lily (Canna spp.) is a bold, tropical-looking flowering plant prized for its large, lush foliage and vibrant, exotic blooms. Despite the name, it’s not a true lily.

Description:

• Leaves: Broad, banana-like leaves in shades of green, bronze, burgundy, or variegated, often forming a dramatic backdrop for the flowers.

• Flowers: Large, showy blooms in red, orange, yellow, pink, or bi-color, held above the foliage on tall stalks. Flowers resemble those of iris or gladiolus.

• Size: Cannas can grow from 2 to over 6 feet tall, depending on the variety.

• Roots: Grown from rhizomes, which can be dug up and stored in colder climates during winter.

Light & Care:

• Thrives in full sun and needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to bloom well.

• Prefers rich, well-draining soil and regular watering—moist, not soggy.

• Fertilize during the growing season for best flower production.

• In colder climates (zones below USDA 7), rhizomes should be lifted after the first frost and stored indoors until spring.

Cannas are excellent for garden beds, borders, containers, and even water gardens. Their bold presence makes them a favorite for creating a tropical effect in temperate gardens.
